Socialist Reconstruction

Before I get to talking about this book, I have a small update. I have adjusted all of my reading lists to only be 5 books long, if I finish my list before the end of the month I get to read whatever, or just stop reading for the month, I just can't start on next months books. Shortening the lists even more, from 8 to 5, should allow me to have more peace of mind about my reading, and also give me more time for other hobbies and down time.

Also, in other news, I am attempting to make an "Internet Survival Guide for 2024," which will consist of helpful tools and links for how to make the web more user friendly in today's day and age, such as ad blockers, youtube clients for mobile use, how to use VPNs, how to torrent, and other things of that nature. If you have any suggestions or tools that you find helpful, please let me know about them so I can include them!

Now, about this book. I found this to be a really interesting read. It was written by the Party for Socialism and Liberation to give an idea of what a socialist United States could look like, and how it would function, at least in the first 10 years or so. They do not theorize about how this revolution will come about, but they do discuss ideas for how to create a functioning society after the working class has taken the power from the ruling class. They discuss ideas for how to provide food, housing, electricity, water, education, and healthcare to a country in an equitable way, where everyone receives what they need.

It is a well known thing among leftists that there can be no one blueprint for how socialism or communism will happen, as each country and region will have different needs and priorities, and these need to be evaluated on an individual basis. This book acknowledges that, but it also uses a quote, most commonly attributed to Fredric Jameson and Slavoj Žižek, "It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism" to justify the writing of this book, saying that it is to serve as an aid for those who cannot imagine a U.S. without capitalism, to give people an idea of what could be.

Overall I really enjoyed this book's theories and ideas for what a better world could look like and how it could function. I think it is important to keep in mind, if you read this book, that it is merely a concept piece, it is not a perfect system, and it doesn't strive to be, it is only a glimpse into what we could have. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone, regardless of your background.
